SDHRS Adoption Application Follow-Up

Thank you for meeting with me to discuss adopting a rabbit!

As we discussed,  the next step will be for you to get your rabbit’s living area and play area set up and then to send over photos for review before we approve your adoption.  If you agree to completing our minimum requirements, I can put a bunny  on hold for you. Please email me that you agree to the minimum requirements. Please note, we keep rabbits on hold 7 days at a time.  We will need you to keep in contact with us at least once a week during set-up time or we will release the adoption hold.

We recommend visiting our online bunny store to purchase any supplies you will need:

As discussed, please get as close to everything on our list to make this process move faster.

Basic Bunny Supplies

Here is a quick-reference list of what we minimally require that you purchase for your rabbit before bringing him or her home:

  • 4’x4’ X-pen (minimum height of 30”) Please note: this is the minimum space for one bunny even with access to a larger out to play area. Two or more rabbits or larger rabbits will require a minimum of a 4’ x 8’ X-pen (minimum height of 30”) even if you plan on having your rabbit free-roam and/or a separate out to play area. Pen extender can be added and Pen lid.

  • Large litter box.

  • Paper-based or wood pellet litter (such as Carefresh) paper or wood

  • Large box of grass hay (Timothy, Orchard, or mixed)

  • Small food bowl

  • Large (7.5”) ceramic water crock

  • Hidey box with at least two openings for entrance/exit such as a  Cottontail Cottage or the Kissing Booth or gable house.

  • Non-slippery flooring such as carpet squares, area rug, towels, or blankets. Here is an example of what you can use to

protect your carpets where bunny will live:

From Home Depot
  • Timothy hay-based pellets.  Because our rabbits are on the Oxbow Essentials Adult Rabbit Food, we ask our adopters to purchase this food for the bunnies, even if they want to TRANSITION the bunny to another food.

  • Hay.  Because our rabbits are on this hay, we ask our adopters to purchase this hay for the bunnies, even if they want to TRANSITION the bunny to another brand hay.

  • Leafy green vegetables

  • Bunny-safe toys

  • Hard-sided carrier with non-slip pad in bottom

  • Rescue” or other disinfectant effective against RHDV2 (Disinfect living and exercise spaces before setting up x-pen and supplies) - Please remember to disinfect all areas bunny will be in with this disinfectant before bringing bunny home.

  • Comb such as the Hairbuster

  • Please see photos below to see what we minimally require in all of our bunny spaces.

*Please also note, if you have large carpeted areas, we ask families who have carpeted housing and have worn shoes indoors  to use a deep cleaning machine (like a carpet steamer or shampooer) then spray the surface with the Rescue disinfectant. Please see attached report on Rescue's formulation in disinfecting bacteria from carpet. The results show that without an agitating element like a carpet cleaner, Rescue is far less effective, and results with viruses are likely similar. Carpet cleaners are readily rentable, and you can disinfect them in case the previous user had a gnarly mess. Carpet can be tricky, and starting with a clean, low-risk base is much easier to maintain for your bunny's safety for the long term.

Part of the adoption fee includes a certificate for you to visit one of our preferred veterinarians for a wellness check. Please click the button below to view our list of local rabbit-savvy vets who are participating in this program, and please let me know which one you prefer so that we can prepare the certificate for you.

As discussed in our meeting, once you have your set-up ready, we will need photos and/or videos of the set-up to approve. It is important that you cc everyone on the email so one of us can respond. Once we receive your photos, we may ask for another zoom call for you to show us the space.  Once the requirements have been satisfied, we will approve your adoption and we can send over the adoption contract for you to review, sign, and return, as well as the invoice for the adoption fee and other informational literature.
